Used Continental GT inspection: confirm the generation and gearbox first
Identify a Continental GT generation and transmission before comparing service records, road-test observations or pre-purchase quotations.
Published

The Continental GT name covers more than one generation and transmission arrangement. When inspecting a used example, begin with vehicle identity rather than a generic checklist for “a Bentley gearbox.” Registration dates and exterior changes are not reliable substitutes for the actual specification.
Use the generation as your starting point
Bentley's launch material for the third-generation Continental GT, announced in 2017, describes an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. That statement applies to the car described in that release; it must not be transferred to every earlier or later Continental simply because the model name matches.
Confirm the model year, powertrain and transmission fitted to the car being sold. Ask for records that identify the vehicle and the work performed, with private identifiers handled securely.
Review history before interpreting a drive
Look for dated maintenance and repair invoices, not just a stamp or a verbal assurance. If the seller mentions previous transmission work, ask what was actually replaced, adjusted or investigated and whether supporting records exist. An undocumented “gearbox service” does not establish which task took place.
During a permitted, safe road assessment, note the conditions in which any unusual behaviour appears. Cold operation, warm operation, selecting a direction and a specific shift are different observations. Do not repeatedly provoke harsh changes to try to diagnose the car yourself.
Define the pre-purchase report
A useful diagnostic inspection separates stored observations and present symptoms from confirmed causes. A mechanical assessment should state what was inspected and any access or testing limitations. Neither a warning-free dashboard nor a short drive proves the complete condition of the transmission.
Turn findings into a decision
Request a written list of confirmed findings, unresolved questions and the scope of any further investigation. This helps distinguish a maintenance requirement from a repair proposal or an unverified concern. The purpose is to understand the specific vehicle before purchase, not to give all Continental GTs the same assumed fault profile.
Discuss your vehicle
See the Bentley information page or send a model-specific enquiry. Confirm the proposed work and vehicle suitability before booking.
